Do you want to be a myth buster?
Well, now’s your chance. Together, let’s bust myths about children with disabilities.
In the Philippines, only 1 in every 3 children with disability goes to school.
This is despite the fact that all children have the right to education – and that there are international and local laws protecting such rights for children with disabilities.
So if everyone has the right to go to school, how come not all children with disabilities are inside the classroom?
Misinformation is among the culprits.
Busting myths
Until today, several Filipinos still do not understand disability. Not everyone is aware that persons with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else.
The first step we can do to change this is to bust myths and misinformation about children with disabilities:
Myth:
Children with disability have no purpose.
FACT:
Each child has her or his own personality, talents, and ideas. We need to guide and support them so they could explore and improve their potential.
*
Myth:
Children with disability should just stay at home.
FACT:
They deserve to learn just as much as you do. Children with disability have the right to go to school. Parents should not be ashamed of their own children, instead they should support inclusive education.
*
Myth:
Parents of children with disability are bad and cursed.
FACT:
Having a disability is not a curse. No child should be ridiculed for who they are, and no parent should be blamed for having a child with disability. Instead of finding faults, families and communities should focus on how to support children with disabilities by creating safe learning environments.
*
Myth:
Children with disability are less capable and talented than other kids.
FACT:
Having a disability doesn’t make anyone less of a person. Each child is unique and gifted with her or his own talent. This is why all children should be able to go to school, so they can further hone and develop their minds and skills. Teach children to respect diversity.
*
Myth:
Children with disabilities are nothing but a burden to families.
FACT:
All children deserve love, care, and respect. All these should begin at home.
Disabilities don't define a child's life. Together, let's discrimination by supporting inclusive education!
