In partnership with Radyo ng Bayan, a local radio broadcasting network in Tacloban, Save the Children organized a three-day radio broadcasting workshop for children that could help develop their self-confidence in expressing their own views and opinions on issues that concern and affect them. A total of 30 students from the municipalities of Dulag and Mayorga, Leyte participated in this activity dubbed as “Children’s Voices in Media,” which also aims to build on their skills for public speaking, and provide a venue for them to speak and be heard in one of the most influential channels of broadcast communication in the province.
The workshop included introductory lectures on radio broadcasting, as well as relevant discussions on children’s rights. Through different group activities, the workshop also provided the participants with opportunities to socialize with other children, and have a venue of information sharing about different issues concerning them and subjects that they find relevant.
To culminate the workshop, the children were also given the opportunity to visit the Radyo ng Bayan broadcast station in Tacloban City. In the upcoming weeks, all children will be given the opportunity to actually go live on air, apply some of the new skills they’ve learned and share their knowledge on children’s rights to a wider audience.
